US military service personnel risk capture, torture and death if caught behind enemy lines. Prisoners of war are usually used as bargaining chips but treatment at the hands of the enemy can be extremely harsh, as in the Vietnam war.

John Kerry served as a Mekong Delta boat commander during the Vietnam War. After he was decorated in the war and returned he became disillusioned with the war and rose to national leader in the antiwar movement.
