Why women smoke and what it costs us

Article Abstract:

A woman who began smoking at age 12 explains why she started and why she still smokes at 30. She says that smoking is a part of her, and that the 13 months that she gave it up, she felt a part of herself missing. She concedes that she needs to quit, and she is well aware of the hazards of smoking, but giving it up permanently will mean letting go of a treasured past.

Peter Stackpole, a founding photographer for Life magazine, lost his home in the October fire in Oakland, CA. The negatives representing a lifetime of work were lost as well. Some of his most famous pictures are reprinted for this article.
