A different kind of politician
Article Abstract:
Women politicians are slowly gaining acceptance among the electorate. However, their increasing presence is more evident in the lower levels of government than in Congress. A study conducted by the Center for the American Woman and Politics at Rutgers University shows that in California, the number of women serving as mayors or working in city councils increased by 111% from 1975 to 1985 while in 1991, only 17.5% of the legislative seats were held by women. It is surmised that the growing popularity of women politicians among voters nowadays is a result of the emerging recognition that such feminine traits of women as patience and tolerance are essential to the effective conduct of a public office.

A left-right confrontation
Article Abstract:
Public-opinion polls show that Congresswoman Barbara Boxer is leading over Bruce Herschensohn in thesenatorial race in California. The lead which the representative from Marin County holds over the television personality from Los Angeles may be attributedto strong voter sentiment for a need for political change. As a female Democrat, Boxer may be perceived as representative of this change. Meanwhile, Herschenson's campaign is handicapped by financial problems and by the dismay of Republican women over party positions on women's rights issues.

Article Abstract:
Californian Governor Pete Wilson plans to shift property tax revenue to the state schools and impose sales tax for every county to maintain and improve the financial situation of the state. The deterioration of the state's best prevention programs, such as schools, higher education and health care programs can be prevented by planning a new budget. The property taxes should be collected by the local governments and sales tax by the state, in which case the Legislation and the governor would be held responsible for the increase in sales tax.
