Computer, IT apps drive smart card deployment
Article Abstract:
Electronic commerce, PKI and laptop security are areas where smart cards may provide the immediate security solution. Andrew Morbitzer, vice- president of marketing for Baltimore Technologies, which develops PKI and smart card technologies, says smart cards are definitely being adopted. The company is providing security for American Express' blue card project. He adds that smart cards have a bright future, citing the blue card program as an example. American Express will distribute free card readers to its clients that can be hooked up with their computers. The card would also have magnetic stripes so they can be used with standard terminals at stores.

The future is in the (smart) cards
Article Abstract:
Smart cards represent the future of security card technology. Older card technology such as magnetic swipe and Wiegand is becoming more vulnerable to compromises as technological changes move at an ever increasing rate. Smart cards are equipped with a CPU and memory, with the CPU giving greater level of protection to data. While most smart cards are contact cards, new developments are pointing in the direction of hybrid contactless and combination cards.

Proximity cards, readers offer more choices, flexibility
Article Abstract:
Proximity card technology is moving towards the adoption of high frequency, specifically 13.56 MHz. Reasons for the shift include the adoption of the frequency as the standard for smart cards and the less expensive manuafacturing cost for the support equipment required for the cards at that frequency. It is hoped that the adoption of the global standard for high frequency proximity card will eventually lead to the adoption of open architecture.
