Crime and the timing of work
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to verify if crime plays a role in the propensity of workers in large metropolitan areas to work more during daylight hours. Extant research demonstrates the lower propensity to work evenings and nights in major metropolises and the decline this work since 1973. This study used data on working time from the Current Population Surveys and on crime statistics from FBI reports. Findings revealed that changes or inter-area differences in crime rates do not explain the lower propensity to work evenings and nights in large metropolitan areas as well as the secular decline in evening and night work. However, higher homicide rates were found to result in the reduction of this work, resulting in economic losses of $4 billion to $10 billion.
