Evidence on metropolitan wage differences across industries and over time
Article Abstract:
The degree and persistence of regional wage differences across sectors were examined using data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) for May 1974-1976 and from the 1984 CPS annual file. It was shown that wages varied across standard metropolitan statistical areas (SMSAs), as well as across sectors within SMSAs, even after controlling for such factors as human capital, rent, cost of living and demographic aspects. Also studied were recent average wage trends for certain sector groups, area wage premia and the labor force composition, and the changes in the regional wage structure.
