Here comes UC Merced, ready or not

Article Abstract:

US Vice President Al Gore remains a keen supporter of the planned University of California campus at Merced, CA, and has pledged to pursue special laws to accelerate the environmental review of the campus development. The 17-square-mile campus is due to be built on highly environmentally sensitive land adjacent to the world's largest unfragmented vernal pool grassland environment. Merced has also welcomed the new university, with the campus and surrounding community expected to contain over 50,000 people. The campus should open in fall 2005.
