Local geographic spillovers between university research and high technology innovations
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to examine empirical evidence on the degree of spatial spillover between university research and high technology innovations. More focus has been given to the spatial extent of the local geographic effects that research may have on the innovative capacity in a region, directly or indirectly through private sector research and development interactions. A formal model of the knowledge production function has been proposed. Findings have revealed that the inclusion of the alternative indices in the geographic knowledge production function provided strong and unequivocal evidence of local spatial externalities which transcended the boundaries of counties. A positive and significant relationship has been revealed between university research and innovative activity, directly and indirectly through its impact on private sector research and development.
