Low road of the month
Article Abstract:
Smear campaigns have been part of American politics for a long time. Republican Sen Joseph McCarthy has mastered this practice forty years ago and has effectively destroyed his rivals' political careers. Republican Congressmen Bob Dornan, Duncan Hunter and Randy Cunningham seem to be following McCarthy's footsteps and have chosen Democratic presidential nominee Bill Clinton as their target. Their accusations range from Clinton's unpatriotic character to his alleged KGB connections. The smear campaigns are said to be part of Pres George Bush's re-election bid.

Low road of the month (runner-up)
Article Abstract:
Gordon Bloyer, Republican congressional candidate Peter Frusetta's campaign manager, has accused incumbent Democrat Rusty Areias of using drugs. Bloyer's innuendoes were based on suppositions regarding Areias' appearance and strange behavior. He admitted that Areias' behavior may have resulted from illness or stress and that his accusations have no basis in fact. Meanwhile, Frusetta stated that he had no prior approval of Bloyer's actions and was sorry it happened. Areias denied the accusations and condemned Frusetta's tactics as a smear campaign against him.
