Mary Nichols, Resources Secretary: to the woodshed ... and back
Article Abstract:
California Resources Secretary Mary Nichols was one of the first environmentalist lawyers in the state, and can thus be seen as a genuine pioneer. However, she has so far become most well known for clashing with Governor Gray Davis over her decision to retract a pro-farmer legal brief that former Governor Pete Wilson's team filed in a legal case about water. This incident is seen by some observers as a test case of what can happen to those who anger Davis by acting without prior permission.

Thanks for the memories: of scoundrels and felons
Article Abstract:
Former California Senate chief David Roberti (D) is now head of the Integrated Waste Management Board, but he is still smarting from the time in 1994 when he was disallowed to run again for a seat in the state legislature. Roberti is of the opinion that term limits on legislators tip the balance of power in favor of the governor. He also says that term limits make legislators more short-sighted about the problems at hand as they worry about their future career opportunities.

The economic silver lining to gun laws
Article Abstract:
The gun control package introduce in California is in some ways having a positive impact on gun manufacturers and sellers. The package does not become fully effective until 2002, and in the meantime gun sales are rising significantly. Many people feel the need to buy a gun now, while it is still possible to do so. Sales are also being boosted by gun collectors seeking to beat the one-handgun-a-month limit that came into effect on Jan 1, 2000.
