Opposition in Italy
Article Abstract:
The Communist Party (CP) has dominated leftist political opposition in Italy since 1945. From 1945 to 1992, the CP committed itself to maintenance of the Italian constitution and the parliamentary system of government. From 1955, the CP frequently voted with the government to pass essential legislation. The CP also cooperated with the center-right parties to minimize social strife. This cooperative policy developed from the CP's desire to avoid civil war and its past collaboration with the center-right against Mussolini and the Fascists. The CP and center-right parties have become more polarized since 1992.

In search of oppositions: South East Asia in focus
Article Abstract:
The four factors of regime character, social class relationships, the impact of the radical Left, and the structure of civil religious institutions have played significant but differing roles in the emergence and direction of opposition politics in Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. The Thai combination of a military government draped in parliamentary trappings, a well-established middle class, state-run Buddhism and the lack of a radical leftist tradition, for example, has led to largely peaceful opposition politics centered in urban middle-class support for parliamentary democracy.
