Reconciling voters' behavior with legislative term limits
Article Abstract:
Rational voters tend to re-elect incumbents while simultaneously supporting proposals for term limits. An explanation for this puzzling event is presented with focus given on the free-riding problem voters face whenever they elect their representatives. It is apparent that voters use term limits to coordinate their voting behavior andavoid an inefficient political outcome. One way to resolve this free-riding problem is by allowing voters to select parties rather than individuals. Through a proportional representation system, the number of seats a party can hold will depend on the total vote.

A model of political equilibrium in a representative democracy
Article Abstract:
The winner of an election is likely to implement a policy which lies somewhere between their favored policy and a more moderate, utilitarian optimum. Assuming a two-party representative democracy, voters will elect a party whose policies differ strongly from the other. However, voters are likely to insist on a modified version of any final policy. If the electorate has a stronger affinity for political parties than issues, there will be less of a shift toward the middle.
