Residential segregation and interracial economic disparities: a simultaneous-equations approach
Article Abstract:
The relationship between interracial economic disparities and residential segregation is analyzed through the development of a four-equation econometric model using 1970 Census data and statistics taken from the HUD-conducted 1977 Housing Marketing Practices Survey. The model uses two-stage least-squares procedures to estimate parameters. Among the topics discussed are: the residential location of black and white households in urban areas, the related causes and effects of racial segregation, and the specifications concerning the model and data used. Empirical test results indicate that interracial economic disparities and residential segregation can be modeled as a simultaneous-equation system and that parameter estimates generated from single-equation models are biased. Also, interracial economic disparities are found to be associated with a high degree of segregation.

A general equilibrium model with agglomerative economies and decentralized employment
Article Abstract:
Analysis of the urban general equilibrium model focuses on two city sectors: the central business district and the decentralized manufacturing sector. It is shown that the central business district is comprised mainly of offices, and consequently is agglomerative economically, arising from the need for face-to-face personal contact by its office inhabitants. The model is also extended to illustrate certain equilibrium effects created by various zoning policies.
