Silicon Valley
Article Abstract:
Silicon Valley in Santa Clara County, CA serves as the catalyst in the economic and technological growth of the San Francisco Bay Area. It holds 244 of the Bay Area's largest public companies, which have generated a total of 200,000 jobs since 1992. In 1997, a total of $2.7 billion in venture capital have been infused in the Valley. Its proximity to the engineering departments of Stanford and University of California is one of the factors for its creative employee base. Orange County: fiscal disaster savages once-wealthy county, but the wounds were self-inflicted
Article Abstract:
Orange County, CA, has applied for bankruptcy protection due to the economic crisis it faced in Dec 1994, due to a fallout in risky investments in securities. Major structural changes have been advocated for prevention of such a situation in future. The county's long-serving treasurer-tax collector Robert L. Citron announced his resignation on Dec 5, 1994, and as a part of structural reforms, a Texas-like system in which the treasurer is not elected has been recommended.
