Status-seeking, income taxation and efficiency
Article Abstract:
One effective way of controlling the socio-economic effect of status-conferring consumption is to place higher taxes on the income of those whose earnings are large, instead of placing higher taxes on the status-conferring goods. Taxing income instead of the commodity is effective based on a signal theory approach to consumption. Such a form of control helps alleviate pressures on the labor supply as well as normalizing consumption and has the added benefit of improving public good through subsidies on social programs.
