Superintendent of Public Instruction
Article Abstract:
Santa Ana teacher Gloria Matta Tuchman and incumbent Superintendent Delaine Eastin will face each other in the Nov 1998 race for the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in California. Although Eastin had 1,977,070 votes over Tuchman's 1,178,273 votes, Eastin has cause for concern since she took only 43% of statewide vote. It means that there are 57% of voters wanting another to replace her. This, despite the fact that Democratic turnout was heavy during the primaries and she is a Democrat.

Article Abstract:
Delaine Eastin won the position of California's Superintendent of Public Instruction over Gloria Matta Tuchman in a nonpartisan contest. Eastin garnered 54% of the votes while Tuchman received 47%. Eastin was able to generate more than $2 million for her campaign while Tuchman received substantial contributions from wealthy conservatives who favored educational vouchers. Eastin's stand on education policies is seen to be more attuned with the policies of governor-elect Gray Davis.

Superintendent of Public Instruction
Article Abstract:
Incumbent Delaine Eastin is running against Gloria Matta Tuchman of Santa Ana, CA, for the public instruction superintendency of the state of California. In an Aug 28, 1998 Field Poll, Eastin showed a comfortable margin, 37% over 18%, over Tuchman. A fierce opponent of bilingual education, which Eastin avidly supports, and a co-chair of Proposition 227, Tuchman is believed to have limited statewide name identification and political skills.
