Teaching character through religion
Article Abstract:
Violence in schools in the United States has led to questions about the importance of teaching pupils about character and conscience. Experts believe students have to know what is good and ensure they do good things as a means of raising moral standards. One way of doing this is by thinking about the Ten Commandments. However, current teaching trends frown on teachers imposing their own morals and standards on students. There have also been lawsuits resulting from religious education in schools.

An education agenda
Article Abstract:
Education will most likely become a heated topic of debate in the California election campaign this fall 1998. Recent statewide test results indicated that a majority of California's English-fluent public school students scored below the national average in most subjects. These results clearly reflect the serious problems afflicting the state's public education system, which merely an increase in spending will not address.

Unions flex their muscles
Article Abstract:
Government in California is destroying the competitive labor market and promoting union monopoly. This backward trend is headed by Governor Gray Davis, who replaced privately contracted janitorial workers with full-time unionized state employees at around double the cost. Spokespeople for Davis claim that he is only trying to ensure fairness, but it is difficult to see how the increased costs can be fair to taxpayers.
