The Bharatiya Janata Party of India
Article Abstract:
India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become a significant focus of opposition to the Congress Party. BJP bases its appeal on Hindu nationalism and has capitalized on such issues as control of Kashmir and Hindu-Muslim conflict. Moreover, the ineptitude of rival parties helped BJP to increase its percentage of the vote by 4% in 1989 and by 8.5% in 1991. BJP's continued growth depends on extending its support to south-central India, on enunciating a clear economic policy and on how well it translates its religious nationalism into effective government.

The general elections in India
Article Abstract:
The 1996 national elections in India operated as a referendum both on the officials in power and on the power of the Indian Parliament itself. The economic and ethnic policies of the National Congress party were the focus of the elections. The Hindu nationalists party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), emerged with the most members of Parliament. A majority of voters oppose the Hindu nationalist perspective, so coalition-building and moderation will be necessary if the BJP is to accomplish anything legislatively.

Appearance and reality in Indian politics: making sense of the 1999 general election
Article Abstract:
The author describes the state of national politics in India, and the powers involved in the 1999 election. India's democracy appears to be widening as more marginalized political coalitions seek to remove power from India's political elites by forming smaller, very specific political parties. This has resulted in a less representative democracy.
