Toilet cleaning and department chairing: volunteering a public service
Article Abstract:
The researcher showed that in a situation where the carrying out of a public service task will benefit all but is best performed by only one person, the volunteer is most likely to be the person for whom the benefit of doing the job outweighs its cost. The volunteer is also most likely to be the one most impatient to consume such benefits. Finally, the volunteer is often the one who stands to enjoy such benefits for the longest period of time. In this way, searching for volunteers can be likened to a war of attrition in which everyone is tempted to just wait until someone else volunteers.

Rival charities
Article Abstract:
Competition among nonprofit entities results in better charitable works as it allows other nonprofit groups to solicit higher voluntary contributions from the public whenever a monopoly company is incapable of providing public goods. It also stimulates specialization among rival nonprofit groups instead of imitation. People engaged in the operation of nonprofit firms tend to commit themselves to allocation rules to enhance their respective firms' overall contributions.
