Article Abstract:
The press can have an adverse impact on the candidacy of women politicians. Journalists tend to use positive expressions to describe male politicians, but can turn the public against women politicians by the use of adjectives such as grandmotherly, bubbly, chipper or perky. Women who have suffered because of press coverage or lack of it include Jane Harman and Kathleen Brown in the election for governor of California and Elizabeth Dole in her campaign for nomination as presidential candidate.
