An emergent merger; the combination of two Boston ERs may set a record for speed
Article Abstract:
Boston's Beth Israel and Deaconess hospitals were able to meet the deadline they set for merging their two Level 1 ERs by selling the idea to the staff and the community. Jayne Carvelli Sheehan, who heads the combines Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, notes that another thing that helped to accomplish the merger in record time was the implementation of a handful of basic team-building principles.

Burning issues
Article Abstract:
The American Hospital Assn helped persuade the Environmental Protection Agency to modify its standards for upgrading hospital incinerators. The Clean Air Act restricts emissions of substances such as mercury, dioxins and other pollutants. Some institutions find they can save money by shipping medical wastes out of state to places where environmental requirements are less stringent.

Badly braced for the big one
Article Abstract:
California hospitals are being required to earthquake-proof by the year 2030. It is estimated to cost $10 billion to retrofit the buildings so they can stay operational during such a disaster. Many of the buildings were built in the 1960's when fewer quality controls existed. Hospital administrators must finance the projects themselves and have a compliance plan by 2001.
