Body support testing and rating
Article Abstract:
Makers of hospital mattresses, covers and overlays claim that their products give adequate body support and minimal pressure. Unidentified body support products were assessed by measuring the trochanter interface pressure of side-lying patients. The products were rated as to their Rogers efficiency factor (REF) and comfort factor (C). REF or improvement factor, is the pressure difference from a hard surface and the product surface taken as a percentage from the hard surface pressure. C is subjective but was found to be related to trochanter pressure. Results show that these body support products can be quantitatively measured and users must be advised of the product's merits based on these quantitative scales.

Converting to knit contour sheets
Article Abstract:
Using knit contour sheets instead of flat sheets in hospital beds offers great advantages to nurses, patients and hospital laundry staff. Flat bottom sheets cover most hospital mattress and require the use of a draw sheet to keep them neatly tucked at the corners and sides. However, switching to knit contour sheets, which follows the shape of the bed, does away with this draw sheet requirement which translates into a reduction in hospital linen laundry. Contour sheets are also more comfortable for patients and require less nursing effort to put into beds.
