Politics versus policy analysis
Article Abstract:
Medicare spending is expected to dominate discussions in Congress on its 1995 sessions. The Republican campaign to reduce the budget deficit without increasing taxes and cutting defense spending is expected to add pressure to these discussions. Aside from political pressure, policy analysis is also expected to be dominated by budget math. The need to reduce spending will require the use of statistical analyses to monitor the costs of medicare spending and prevent it from escalating.

Breast cancer treatment choice and mastectomy length of stay: a comparison of HMO and other privately insured women
Article Abstract:
Breast cancer patients covered by health maintenance organizations (HMOs) tend to have shorter length of hospital stay than their counterparts under other types of insurance coverage. Analysis of hospital discharges from five states revealed that HMO recipients have a 4.5% shorter average length of stay with a relative odd of 1.21 to 1.29 for a hospital stay of one or two days. The probability of undergoing breast-conserving surgery is also low for breast cancer patients covered by HMOs.
