Can rivals play nice?
Article Abstract:
Many healthcare companies that have been traditional enemies are finding the need to come together to form healthcare partnerships in an era of integrated delivery systems. Rivals will continue to struggle over issues such as control, governance, money, among other issues. But, as the working peace forged by executives of Mercy and Unity Hospitals and Medica Health Plans during their parent's integration to form Allina Health System shows, those conflicts can be surmounted.

Article Abstract:
The increasing transformation of non-profit hospitals into for-profit ones is generating a heated public debate. Non-profit hospitals, which traditionally had served those who could not otherwise afford health care services, are gradually finding themselves turning to the for-profit sector in the face of escalating operational costs. Many argue that being acquired by the for-profit hospital systems are the only options they have open.

Several factors influence the evolution of managed care. Physician groups, professional management groups, healthcare purchasing coalitions and employers often affect the initiation of managed care programs within a given demographic market. Legislation and changing philosophies within the healthcare industry also affect the proliferation of managed care plans.
