Cost implications of regionalizing open heart surgery units
Article Abstract:
Studies have predicted that the regionalization of specialized medical services, such as open heart surgery, can generate potential savings of up to $3 million for health care providers and the medically insured. Consolidating specialized medical services facilities will eliminate duplication of expensive capital equipment and highly trained personnel. Analysts believe that by limiting the number of facilities for specialized medical operations and treatment, high patient volume will result, thereby providing high-quality health care at competitive prices.

Clinical and socioeconomic determinants of health care use among HIV-infected patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs
Article Abstract:
A study of HIV-infected patients seeking treatment at the US Department of Veterans Affairs facilities found that socioeconomic factors did not affect whether a patient sought care because all patients are treated in this system regardless of their financial status. A patient's clinical status, or their need for care in the advanced stages of the disease, had an effect on the amount of care sought.
