Current environment: Medicare part D looms, ongoing fallout from Vioxx
Article Abstract:
The federal government is taking up various initiatives to tackle the issue of government aid to Medicare. Part of this, is the prescription drug benefit, often referred to as PDP or Part D. This has provided ample opportunities to pharmaceutical industries, who perceive good sales for their drugs in the near future. The controversies surrounding drug safety of COX0-2 inhibitors, such as MerckEs Vioxx, the various steps taken by the Food and Drug Administration in this regard, and the strategies pharmaceutical companies are taking to maintain their sales, are also discussed.

GSK to post summaries of trial results online
Article Abstract:
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has decided to provide the results of all its clinical trials on its website while Merck & Co has supported the concept of providing late stage clinical trials results mostly the Phase III and Phase IV on the website hosted by the government registry on clinical trials. The demand made by the American Medical Association (AMA) to the United States government to establish a public registry for providing clinical trials results conducted by companies has been discussed.
