Ethics: A Management Tool? A Profile of the Values of Hospital Administrators
Article Abstract:
Presented is a discussion of such ethical dilemmas as social prejudice and conflict of interest and how hospital administrators deal with these problems. Moral medical issues pertaining to abortion, euthanasia and genetic engineering are not consciously in the forefront of hospital adminstrators' comtemplations. Most common are concerns about technology, quality, cost and competition strategies, not ethical perceptions. For this study, a questionnaire methodology was especially adapted, categorizing individual ethical behaviors exhibited by health administrators. The majority of managerial responses indicate that hospital executives feel their behaviors are ethical, but exhibit greater loyalty to institutional rules of conduct than to their own personal merit. Analysis of the data denotes that ethical decision making is limited in a hospital setting because the top administrative body lacks a broad enough outlook to include ethical considerations.

Pay allocations by hospital administrators: an empirical analysis
Article Abstract:
Researchers studied influences on decision-making by 17 hospital administrators, who were participating in a management development program sponsored by their hospital. The subjects assigned pay raises to hypothetical employees based on performance levels, difficulty of replacing, current salary, specialized skills and potential turnover. All of the participants rated performance as important while 12 out of 17 found specialized skills and difficulty of replacing significant. Other factors were important to a lessor degree.
