Expert shows path to collaborative success
Article Abstract:
Senior health care consultant Michael Winer-Cyn claims that successful collaborative efforts between hospitals and other providers hinges on 19 key factors from sufficient funds to open and frequent communications between parties. Winer-Cyn works for the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, a human services agency, which recently completed an analysis of collaborative ventures in different sectors of society. The analysis reveals that some of the key factors in a successful collaboration include the right operating environment, membership, resources, communications, purpose and flexibility.

Hospitals and medical staffs: the concept of planning takes on new meaning
Article Abstract:
Hospital CEOs realize they must involve staff doctors in strategic planning. For example, physicians at St Mary's Hospital and Cabell Huntington Hospital in Huntington, WV, have formed cooperating groups of radiologists and anesthesiologists to serve both hospitals. When planning long-range cooperation, hospital managers should maintain liaisons with physician committees concerned about credentialing. Physicians must also be consulted when planning managed care contracts or designing outpatient facilities.

Hospitals seek new ways to integrate health care
Article Abstract:
Many healthcare providers are touting the benefits of vertically integrated regional delivery systems that stress a continuum of care. These providers have abandoned a competitive philosophy which, in the past, forced them to specialize in order to boost their profit margins, often at the expense of patients. Integrated delivery systems are achievable either through hospital mergers and joint ventures or alliances between hospitals and physicians.
