Jewish Hospital, Louisville, KY, is both expanding and increasing its financial surplus while other hospitals have been downsizing and losing funds. With a surplus of $2 million in the early 1980s, Jewish hospital is thriving with a total of $25 million in 1995. In April 1994, it opened a 14-story, $45 million Jewish Hospital Heart and Lung Center in April 1994. Affiliated with the University of Louisville, the hospital is the 16th largest cardiac facility in the U.S., and expects to do 2,000 open-heart procedures in 1995.

Article Abstract:
The cost of accommodating a physically disabled worker often costs less than employers expect. Typical alterations include providing wheelchair access ramps and improving restroom and department access to accommodate wheelchairs. Baptist Health System in Birmingham, AL, made workplace alterations to accomodate Bob Carroll, a quadriplegic software developer, for less than $500. Baptist Health System's actions earned the company the United Cerebral Palsy Association's 1995 Employee of the Year Award.

The new lingo of added value
Article Abstract:
Health care companies are beginning to look at economic value added (EVA) to gauge the value of a company for shareholders. EVA has not traditionally been used with not-for-profit organizations, but hospitals and for-profit health care firms, such as drug manufacturers, are becoming interested. EVA is less limited than more traditional ways of measuring a company, such as market share and net profit.
