Work redesign calls for new pay and performance plans
Article Abstract:
Hospitals are changing their management systems to support teamwork among self-directed, multi-skilled, cross-functional employees. The old system of rewarding personal achievement needs to be modified to encourage teamwork in a patient-oriented environment. Entire teams may receive performance rewards, instead of individuals. Examples of hospitals with innovative systems include Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, which is participating in a study of work system reorganization.

Experts call for strategic planning link on ADA compliance
Article Abstract:
Experts suggest that the best way for hospitals to implement the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title I employment regulations is to integrate the process with other efforts, such as total quality management programs or human resources planning efforts. By failing to determine how compliance is related to other operations, hospitals could duplicate efforts and fail to fully comply with the law.
