Implementing TQM in the health care sector
Article Abstract:
Strategic programming for implementing total quality management (TQM/CQI) continuous quality improvement for the health care sector are proposed. The suggested model for implementing TQM/CQI consists of five stages: awareness and commitment of top management as regards plans to achieve TQM; planning which involves internal quality assessment of the organization; programming which includes forming quality improvement teams and establishing measures and quality indicators; implementing ongoing education and training; and lastly, annual evaluation of the success or failure of these measures.

Healthcare organizations can follow a four-stage process to ensure the successful implementation of medical practice guidelines. The first stage requires the acceptance of a guideline as the solution to a problem. The second stage involves the elimination of obstacles to guideline implementation. The guideline is initially adopted at the third stage while the fourth stage involves the integration of the guideline into the organizational routine.

The healthcare sector can improve its efficiency by adopting the management strategies employed by successful firms from other industries. Specifically, these firms focused on their core competencies and customer demands. These strategies will also shift attention away from the three main healthcare managerial innovations, namely, vertically integrated healthcare systems, managed care organizations and horizontal integration of providers.
