JCAHO: safety, medical staff issues hinder compliance
Article Abstract:
A report by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) says that stiff accreditation standards are making it more difficult for hospitals to achieve satisfactory compliance ratings. The report also says that lack of funding is contributing to the problem. Over 2/3 of the hospitals studied during the 1987-89 accreditation period were unable to demonstrate proficiency in providing basic medical care. Contingency rates for various categories of medical care are provided.

The facts behind accreditation success stories
Article Abstract:
Hospitals that receive high accreditation ratings cite strict observance of scoring guidelines established by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) as the reason for their success. Other hospitals attribute their high ratings to such practices as the use of physician profiles in the reappointment process, diligent maintenance of medical records, careful supervision of medical staff and implementation of JCAHO's continuous quality improvement program.

JCAHO introduces three new areas of survey concentration
Article Abstract:
The new manual of standards of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Organizations (JCAHO) eliminates outdated and repetitive standards and provides greater flexibility to permit hospitals to solve their own problems while organizing to meet standards. For instance, the hospital may decide on needed frequency of reports on monitoring of basic care; however, medical record review must continue on a quarterly basis. Items to be checked in a JCAHO hospital survey are listed.
