Measurement of consumer-patient preferences using a hybrid contingent valuation method
Article Abstract:
A hybrid, two-stage, contingent valuation approach was used to assess patients' values involving enhancement of asthma treatment. The first stage of the approach entails giving patients a choice between safety and effectiveness of asthma control while the second stage involves assessment of willingness-to-pay attitude (WTP) in relation to single risk dimension. The approach revealed a value estimate for statistical life that ranges between US$8 to US$12 million. Patients' willingness to pay for total management of asthma ranges between US$1000 to US$ 3700 annually.

Too many for too few? Efficiency among dentists working in private practice in Norway
Article Abstract:
A decision-making model, with reference to translog cost function of the second order Taylor expansion, was used to evaluate the efficiency of private practitioners of dentistry in Norway. Through the use of data obtained from Scan Fact, it was determined that low average cost of dental services in Norway may tentatively be the rationale for excess capacity of private dentists, especially those who render services to the adult age group. Statistics also manifested signs of increasing returns to scale, as shown by an estimated 1.85 scale elasticity.
