Patients, physicians, and professional knowledge: implications for CQI
Article Abstract:
Continuous quality improvement (CQI) in the healthcare setting requires that physicians move beyond the traditional physician role of dominance to one of partnership with the patient. Traditional professional knowledge is still critical, but knowledge for improvement becomes very important also for organized healthcare providers. Two individual doctor-patient encounters are analysed for quality improvement implications; and how the CQI concept fits into the group practice environment is also discussed.

Trends and implications of visiting medical consultant outpatient clinics in rural hospital communities
Article Abstract:
Study findings suggest that the specialty physician service market has reacted to increased competition in urban areas by using visiting consultant clinics (VCCs) to move their services into other markets. Use of VCCs in Iowa greatly increased the availability and accessibility of such services. However, VCC growth patterns vary greatly depending on the specialty. Surgical services may have may earlier use of VCCs than non-surgical services, meaning that distribution is stabilizing.

Physician practice acquisitions: valuation issues and concerns
Article Abstract:
There are several different methods that can be used to place a value on a physician's practice. These methods are based upon income, assets and the market. It is important for hospitals to evaluate these valuation techniques and ensure that all tax and legal issues are followed. When all pertinent issues are complied with, then a reasonable price should be paid for the practice.
