Hospital mergers in 1997 reached 200, more than double the total number of mergers in 1994, and there is little sign of a slowdown on the horizon. What has been fueling this trend of megamergers include the desire to save millions, develop more clout with insurers and the ability to survive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.
