Several hospitals in San Antonio, Texas have implemented point-of-care testing of patients. Point-of-care testing allows nurses to perform tests at bedside and get results almost immediately. A test that works well this way is glucose testing.

The value of point-of-care testing when instituting an insulin drip protocol
Article Abstract:
Point-of-care glucose testing is especially useful when administering an insulin drip to patients recovering from open-heart surgery. Hyperglycemia a common complication in cardiac patients but it can be prevented with insulin. Frequent monitoring with a hand-held glucose testing device can maintain proper blood sugar levels and speed the patient's recovery.
