Trial tribulations
Article Abstract:
Physician practice management firms are currently competing with university hospitals for clinical trials that are proving to be a profitable health care field. The companies have an advantage over the academic medical centers because they have faster and more efficient operations. The businesses also possess stronger relationships with physicians compared to health maintenance organizations. In addition, physician practice management companies are appealing to pharmaceutical preparation manufacturers because they can lure significant numbers of people.

Article Abstract:
Management service organizations (MSOs) that work for hospital and doctor groups face challenges in serving both parties adequately and turning a profit, according to a Medimetrix Group survey of 140 MSOs. Only 11% of respondents are breaking even. Part of the problem is consolidation, with 30% of the respondents having experienced an acquisition or merger and 30% anticipating a future deal. Almost all of the MSOs manage physician practices.
