Understanding hospital referrals to home health agencies
Article Abstract:
Evaluation of discharge data for 61 hospitals in Pennsylvania during 1990 suggests that home health agency (HHA) referrals are increasing due to environmental pressures. The use of a logistic regression model, resource dependency theory, and transaction cost economics, revealed that ownership of HHAs by hospitals greatly increased their usage, especially for urban hospitals. The findings further suggest that a close alliance between home health providers and hospitals will greatly benefit the latter in the future.

Discriminant analysis: a technique for adding value to patient satisfaction surveys
Article Abstract:
Patient satisfaction with home health agencies was evaluated on multiple levels, and overall satisfaction with service quality provided the dependent variable for discriminant analysis equations. Surveyed patients responded to questions regarding scheduling, discharge, nurse and office services and home health aide. Eleven sections discriminated between excellent and good and seven discriminated between satisfactory and unsatisfactory.

Organizational and environmental factors in hospital alliance membership and contract management: a resource-dependence perspective
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted on interorganizational relationships (IORs) formed by hospitals from the perspective of resource dependence. The study found that hospitals with more resources were likely to choose hospital alliance memberships as a form of IOR because they represent greater autonomy. Those with fewer resources, however, tended to seek contract management arrangements, giving up more autonomy.
