Bluefield, VA-based Regional Medical Center introduced a smoke-free environment on Mar 1, 1995. An incentive-based wellness program was introduced in 1994 which included smoking cessation classes, motivational presentations, support groups and nicotine patch reimbursement. Additional wellness program features include an exercise program and body-fat analysis. The hospital has not lost patients as a result of its new program which includes staff, patients and visitors to the medical center.

Dallas, TX-based Baylor Health Care Systems implemented a doctor-directed quality control program in 1992 and has saved $2.2 million each year through 1994. Physicians are selected from different departments to work on the quality control team. They have decreased the variety of information systems so that patients see fewer people, move less and answer the same questions at a lesser rate than before.

Ready for a rumble
Article Abstract:
Weymouth, MA Economic Development Planner Michael Milanowski evaluated the economic impact of South Shore Hospital for his master's thesis at the University of Massachusetts. He found that the hospital enriched the area economy by $200 million in 1991. It also increased local jobs, by 44 new jobs, with each $1 million in hospital services rendered. The hospital is an asset to its community.
