A 20-year-old man with recent intermittent abdominal pain, constipation, and diarrhea
Article Abstract:
A 20-year-old-man was diagnosed with diverticulitis with an abscess and peritonitis. Diverticulitis is inflammation of a diverticula, a pouch-like opening in the walls of large intestine. The patient was admitted to the hospital with increasing abdominal pain. Two-and-a-half months before admission, he began having abdominal pain with constipation, diarrhea, and blood in his feces on one occasion. A computed tomographic (CT) scan of his abdomen showed several diverticula filled with air in the pelvic area, and his sigmoid colon (large intestine) had increased in size. Laparotomy revealed diverticulitis with a pelvic abscess. The patient underwent surgery to remove the sigmoid colon and appendix. He returned five months later for closure of the opening in his colon.

Imaging of the hepatobiliary tract
Article Abstract:
CT imaging is becoming the most effective tool for diagnosing diseases of the liver. It can detect metastatic liver cancer and other benign tumors, cirrhosis, injuries caused by trauma and liver infection. One technical advance that has improved CT imaging is the development of helical or spiral CT scanning. This technique can reduce the scanning time from 2 to 5 minutes to about 30 seconds. MRI may be more suitable for detecting iron overload and ultrasound imaging may be more effective for diagnosing gallstones and other diseases of the gallbladder.

A 45-year-old woman with abdominal pain and a polypoid mass in the colon
Article Abstract:
A 45-year-old woman was admitted to a hospital for a one-month history of increasing abdominal pain. Ultrasound and CT scans revealed a mass behind the uterus that was attached to the colon. She was also anemic. Her physicians ruled out cancer because the mass had almost doubled in size in 5 days. Exploratory surgery demonstrated a lesion surrounding the colon in one spot. The portion of colon was removed and opened, which revealed a mass inside the colon. She was diagnosed with intestinal endometriosis and became asymptomatic after surgery.
