A 36-Year-Old Woman With Endometriosis, Pelvic Pain, and Infertility
Article Abstract:
Surgery is the best treatment for endometriosis. Endometriosis occurs when tissue from inside the uterus occurs outside the uterus. This can occur if menstrual blood flows backward or the tissue enters the abdominal cavity in some other way. Even though the tissue is now outside the uterus, it still responds to hormones and can swell, causing pain and disrupting ovulation. Because of this, it can cause infertility. Endometriosis is usually diagnosed by laparoscopy, so an experienced surgeon can remove the tissue at that time. Drugs such as leuprolide acetate, danazol, oral contraceptives, or progestins can be used but surgery will lead to higher pregnancy rates.
