A 67-year-old renal-transplant recipient with anemia, leukopenia, and pulmonary lesions
Article Abstract:
A 67-year-old man with a history of type 1 diabetes was admitted to a hospital with fever and shortness of breath. He had received a kidney transplant for diabetic end-stage kidney failure five months before admission. X-rays of his chest revealed lung abnormalities and his liver and spleen were enlarged. Lymphoma was suspected after other diagnoses were ruled out. An open-lung biopsy revealed a malignant lymphoma. Despite aggressive treatment, he died two weeks after admission. Transplant recipients have a higher risk of cancer because they must take drugs that suppress the immune system.
