A 68-year-old man with paresthesias and severe pain in both hands
Article Abstract:
A 68-year-old retired naval officer was diagnosed with bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome due to multiple myeloma. Myeloma are tumors composed of cells normally found in the bone marrow. He had been admitted to the hospital with numbness, tingling and burning pain in his hands. He could not write, drive a car, or use eating utensils because of the severe pain. Neurological examination showed the patient had little motion of the metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal joints and he could not clench his fist. A bone marrow biopsy showed a large number of abnormal plasma cells. His exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam may have caused the multiple myeloma. High dosages of dexamethasone were administered for five weeks. A carpal-tunnel-release procedure relieved his symptoms. He is now receiving prednisone and melphalan every four weeks. With treatment, the patient's condition has improved substantially.

A comparison of allografting with autografting for newly diagnosed myeloma
Article Abstract:
A trial of the treatment of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma compared a protocol that needed a hematopoietic stem-cell autograft followed by an allograft from a human leukocyte antigen (HLA)-identical sibling with a protocol of tandem autografts. Findings indicate that survival in recipients of a hematopoietic stem-cell autograft followed by allograft from an HLA-identical sibling is superior to that in recipients of tandem stem-cell autografts.
