A 76-year-old woman with multiple bone lesions and thrombocytopenia
Article Abstract:
A 76-year- old woman was admitted to the hospital because of pain in the right hip. The patient had a history of bone lesions of the lumbosacral spine (base of spine), pelvis, right femur (long bone of the upper leg), and ribs. Following nuclear medicine bone scanning, computed tomography (CT) scan of the pelvis, CT scan of the lumbosacral spine, and a bone biopsy of the ilium (a bone on each side of the pelvis), the diagnosis of longstanding hemangiomatosis of the skeleton (multiple benign tumors of blood vessels) was made. One of the lesions (area of abnormal tissue growth) in the wing of the right ilium had developed into a malignant hemangioendothelioma (an overgrowth of the endothelium of the minute capillary vessels). Treatment of the condition usually involves surgical removal of the cancerous tissue followed by radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

A 38-year-old woman with fever, skin lesions, thrombocytopenia, and venous thromboses
Article Abstract:
A 38-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital after experiencing weakness, nausea, and vomiting for two months. At the time of admission, she had a fever and skin lesions. She reported previous episodes of anemia and easy bruising, as well as hair loss one year before admission. After two days, she developed pain and swelling in the left leg. A lung scan indicated a possible pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). On subsequent days, scans gave evidence of clots in several veins. She experienced abdominal pain which lessened after a few days. The clinical diagnoses were antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (an autoimmune disease) and systemic lupus erythematosus (another autoimmune disease). The pathological diagnoses concurred. Article Abstract:
A 57 year old woman was admitted to the hospital with red dots on her lower legs, skin ulcers, arthritis, and poor kidney function. Glomerulonephritis, an inflammation of the small blood vessels in the kidney, and the presence of cryoglobulins, abnormal proteins in the blood, confirmed the diagnosis of cryoglobulinemia. This disease is characterized by joint pain and swelling, skin ulcers, bleeding disorders and kidney damage.
