A lead role
Article Abstract:
The job of surgeon's assistant has been developed by nurses at the National Health Service (NHS) Trust in Milton Keynes, England. Nurses have had to establish new relationships and develop practice skills learnt from theater nurses. The creation of the role of surgeon's assistant has involved an investment but has also brought cost savings. More operations have been performed and more bed-days have been freed at the hospital, and more operations have been performed as day cases.

Right for the job
Article Abstract:
The role of nurses has changed in the UK and this has given rise to some confusion about accountability. Boundaries between nursing and medicine have become less clearly defined. Doctors are responsible for care as a whole while nurses are accountable to patients, the courts and their employers. The language used when delegation is described could place more emphasis on sharing care. There should also be co-operation between regulatory bodies on the issue of accountability.

Setting up a team for professional development
Article Abstract:
The implementation of the UKCC Post-Registration Education and Practice (PREP) arrangements is still surrounded with confusion and uncertainty. Employers must take some responsibility for enabling practitioners to meet the requirements. An approach at East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust has established a professional development team which will remind practitioners how to incorporate learning opportunities into their personal profiles.
