An in vivo technique for measuring the activity of leukocytes in human inflammatory lesions is examined. Topics include an explanation of the technique, which involves reflected-light, tandem-scanning confocal microscopy of capillaries; implications for use of technique in evaluation and therapy for inflammatory conditions; and advantages of technique over invasive procedures.

It is found that one such molecule called thrombomodulin binds and inhibits high mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), a molecule with potent cytokine-like activity.
