A preliminary study of long-term treatment with interferon gamma-1b and low-dose prednisolone in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Article Abstract:
Combining corticosteroids with interferon gamma-1b may be more beneficial than corticosteroids alone in patients with pulmonary fibrosis. Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease. Researchers randomly assigned 18 people with pulmonary fibrosis to take prednisolone only or prednisolone and interferon gamma-1b for one year. Patients who received both drugs experienced an improvement in lung function but those who received only prednisolone had a decline in lung function. Interferon gamma-1b caused fever, chills, and muscle pain, but these side effects did not last longer than a few months.

Sarcoidosis

The symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of sarcoidosis are reviewed. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease that causes lumps to form in various organs. These lumps are called granulomas and are most often formed in the lungs and lymph nodes. Despite years of study, no one knows exactly what causes sarcoidosis.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Article Abstract:
The physiology, diagnosis, and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis are reviewed. This lung disease is believed to result from an abnormal healing response to injury and causes scarring in the lungs that interferes with breathing. It has a poor prognosis and there are few effective treatments.
