A promising new category of dental cements
Article Abstract:
New glass ionomer resin (GI-R) dental cements have desirable physical properties and may represent an innovation in cement technology. Glass ionomer cements have improved since their introduction in the mid-1970s and are widely used in the 1990s. The only major drawback associated with these agents is post-operative tooth sensitivity, which dentists can prevent with desensitizers. Three new GI-R cements available in 1995 are superior to other adhesives in preliminary laboratory tests and clinical use. They are easy to use, have low solubility, release fluoride, resist crown displacement, and do not seem to cause post-operative tooth sensitivity. Until long-term research conclusively demonstrates the clinical acceptability of these cements, dentists should use GI-R cements to fix simple single crowns and three-unit permanent dentures, procedures for which they are ideally suited.
