AMA's plan to fix Federation requires cooperation
Article Abstract:
Membership in the American Medical Assn (AMA) is steadily declining, mainly because of physicians' lack of perceived value for the dues they pay and because of the structure of the society. The AMA's structure is based on a federation model that dates back to 1901, and the representation formula used for the House of Delegates may no longer be appropriate. A group of medical professionals submitted a Study of the Federation, which is to be reviewed by the House of Delegates, but the issues are large and diverse and must be addressed if the national physician body is to survive and thrive.

Future of medical profession rests on AMA's shoulders
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Assn (AMA) represents a majority of US physicians through its general membership and state medical associations. As such, the AMA is a unified national voice for physicians to combat the power of insurance companies, managed care organizations and physician groups. However, it must more accurately represent physicians by requiring membership through a constituent group; it should also redistribute power in its policy groups to reflect the demographics of its members. Also, state medical societies should urge their members to join the AMA.

Taking organized medicine into the 21st century
Article Abstract:
The American Medical Association (AMA) has served the profession well for 150 years, but must be reorganized in order to have a voice in shaping the future of the profession. Mode of practice and payment system are now the predominant shapers of medical practice, not traditional medical ethics or the AMA. The AMA needs internal geographical reform, and must give a greater voice to national specialty societies. Every physician must become involved in the process.
