Absence trends
Article Abstract:
The government claims that public sector sickness costs 6 billion pounds sterling and it plans to reduce absenteeism by 30% by 2002. It is enforcing these rates in every health trust regardless of their current absentee levels. The figure of 6 billion pounds is hard to analyse and it may assume that every sick nurse is replaced by an agency nurse but this does not always happen. Sickness may be caused by the emotional and physical demands of the job, combined with poor management systems and these have to be addressed before sick levels will decline.

Root treatment: this year's RCN Congress will debate whether its general secretary should be elected
Article Abstract:
The RCN Congress will discuss whether members should be able to stand for election to general secretary. There are two options to be considered, opening up the field to any RCN members or advertising the post, with selection to be confirmed by a membership ballot. There is likely to be some opposition to the change, with the Liverpool branch feeling that the position is salaried and that its elected council makes decisions on certain issues.
